I forgot to show you my last Eat Local Challenge meal of the month: Indian cauliflower and potatoes, ginger-creamed kale, and chicken tikka masala over rice. The rice was not local, but let me remind you that I was not officially doing the Eat Local Challenge this year. Just a scaled-back effort in spirit and solidarity. So although I had my local Baer’s Best barley at the ready to substitute for the rice, I didn’t wanna, and so I didn’t. I have other plans for that barley, which don’t involve pretending that it’s basmati rice.
Also, what you can’t see in the picture is that Husband and I consumed the whole meal while floating on our backs in a swimming pool, trays of food resting on our chests. Because we’re both such excellent swimmers!
Local Sources:
Onions, cauliflower, kale, garlic: Waltham Fields, Waltham, MA
Potatoes: Picadilly Farm, Winchester, NH
Cream: High Lawn Farm, Lee, MA
Butter: Cabot, Cabot, VT
Ginger: Me, Waltham, MA
Chicken: Chestnut Farms, Hardwick, MA
Yogurt: Liberté, Montréal (technically Canadian, but they use milk from Vermont farms and I LOVE their yogurt)
That all sounds so good. Especially good to me right now, considering I had an Almond Joy for breakfast and a Snickers for lunch. Damn Halloween and all it's glory!

What is this local barley of which you speak? I love me some barley. And some local.

Thanks for listing the local sources.
My parents, who have lived in Needham for the past 47 years, are moving to Waltham this week.
When would you like them to come for dinner?

My mouth started watering as soon as I saw that photo. What is ginger creamed kale?

melch: You basically saute onions, ginger, and cumin seeds for 5 minutes until soft, then add the kale and some water, cover, and steam until tender. Finish with a tablespoon or two of cream. It's so good!
Karen: Wow, moving to Waltham. Who knew it was such a destination! Do they like Indian food?
Caitlin: Baer's Best barley can be found at Russo's and some CSAs carry it, I think. It's one of the few local grains I can find.
Husband: This is true. Sometimes I forget to keep my air holes above water.
Amy: I know. How many miniature-sized candy bars are too many for one sitting?

I'm soooo envious of your CSA/CFA. There doesn't seem to be anything in my area of MA (southern MA, bordering RI) that carries locally raised meats and/or fish... unless you've heard of anything??
