Hey Tammy, I also recently got a free slab of marble. Did you do anything to get yours food-ready, such as sand it or finish it with anything? Mine is a little rough and dirty...

Erin: Mine wasn't terribly dirty, just scratched in spots. I washed it off with warm water and dried it with a cloth. From what I've read, you need to be careful about which cleaning products you use on marble. Some are too acidic and can stain, and others are too abrasive. I don't plan to use the slab for rolling out pastry (it has a hole smack in the middle--I think it used to be a tabletop). It's more for photo purposes (I set the bagels on a piece of waxed paper just in case).

I'm glad you got your hands on one, too. They're quite pricey new!
